Thierry Fischer and Clara Jumi Kang will perform with the Utah Symphony on Thursday 12 June to an audience full of orchestra leaders from across North America, all visiting Salt Lake City to attend the League of American Orchestras’ annual conference.
In a programme celebrating the Americas Clara Jumi Kang performs Korngold’s violin concerto, composed after Korngold had emigrated to Hollywood from Nazi Vienna. This is framed by works by the Mexican composers past and present (Revueltas and Gabriela Ortiz) and culminates in the sounds of New York city as seen by Varese, another European who moved to the USA.
REVUELTAS: Noche de encantamiento (“Night of Enchantment”)
KORNGOLD: Violin Concerto
GABRIELA ORTIZ: Téenek – Invenciones de Territorio
VARESE: Ameriques
Fischer returns to the Utah Symphony to conduct this specially conceived programme as their Conductor Emeritus, having been Music Director 2009-2023. Varese’ Ameriques is one of Fischer’s signature works, and a few months ago he performed it with the Sao Paulo Symphony (of which he is currently Music Director) at the Berlin Philharmonie, in the opening concert of the prestigious Musikfest Berlin:
“the sonically exuberant Ameriques was performed with incredible transparency, and merged seamlessly into an event such as the Philharmonie has rarely experienced” – Berliner Morgenpost
