This September, Thierry Fischer conducts a new production of Frank Martin’s “La Tempête” at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Directed by Netia Jones and co-produced with the Opéra national du Rhin, this new staging brings Fischer back to a work he has long championed—having previously conducted it in concert in 2008 and recorded it for Hyperion, a release that won the 2012 ICMA Award.
Begun in 1952 and premiered in German at the Vienna State Opera in 1956, “La Tempête” is Frank Martin’s landmark opera based on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”. In 1967, Martin presented a French adaptation in Geneva featuring Pauline Martin’s French translation, in which the role of Ariel is played by an actor supported by the chorus. Returning to the Grand Théâtre for the first time in nearly sixty years, this celebrated French version will be brought to life in Netia Jones’s production.
Fischer leads the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Grand Théâtre de Genève Chorus, with a distinguished cast featuring Stéphane Degout as Prospero, Catherine Trottmann as Miranda, Julien Dran as Ferdinand, and Joseph Chosson as Ariel.
Performances take place on September 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 & 26, 2026, at the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices.
