The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (Osesp) has announced the renewal of Thierry Fischer’s contract as Music Director and Principal Conductor through 2031 today.
Since the beginning of his tenure in 2020, Fischer has played a central role in consolidating Osesp’s artistic identity, elevating its performance standards, and shaping ambitious, coherent programming across seasons. Under his leadership, the Orchestra has pursued a balance between core symphonic repertoire and contemporary creation, with sustained attention to artistic diversity and refined curatorship.
“The extension of my contract affirms a welcome sense of continuity and shared artistic direction, building on a journey that began in 2020 and has been deeply rewarding. Over these years, the orchestra has undergone remarkable musical growth, refining its sound while embracing ever greater artistic ambition. What inspires me most is the orchestra’s spirit and collective curiosity – a shared openness that has shaped a strong and vibrant artistic partnership. It is a true privilege to serve as music director, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue this journey together, with enthusiasm for the paths still to be explored and the music yet to unfold,” says Thierry Fischer.
The extension of Fischer’s contract reflects the institution’s commitment to long-term artistic planning and continuity. Future seasons will continue to explore large-scale repertoire cycles, commission and present new works, and deepen Osesp’s engagement with audiences in São Paulo, across Brazil, and internationally.
Looking ahead, Fischer’s artistic project places particular emphasis on strengthening Osesp’s international presence through tours, artistic residencies, and strategic collaborations with leading soloists, conductors, composers, and cultural institutions worldwide. Experimentation with new concert formats and closer dialogue with digital platforms will also play an increasingly important role, expanding the Orchestra’s reach while maintaining the highest artistic standards.
Thierry Fischer’s renewed mandate aligns with Osesp’s broader institutional strategy of stability, artistic ambition, and public impact, ensuring the Orchestra continues to develop as one of the leading artistic institutions in Latin America.
